Ligue 1 Wrap-Up: Nice Secure Fourth Place, Troyes Relegated

The final weekend of Ligue 1 is in the books. As we mentioned last week, a number of games this weekend had the potential to shake up the table. At the top, St. Etienne needed a victory and a Lyon loss or draw to attain Champions League football. Unfortunately for Les Verts, Lyon went out and beat Stade Rennes in what was actually a fairly close game. Unfortunately for Rennes, they conceded a penalty and Clement Grenier converted a stunning free kick to cap a 2-0 victory.

Not only did Lyon crush St. Etienne’s hopes of finishing third, but Lille went out and took 4th place from Les Verts as well by earning a 1-1 draw. Lille, playing at home, dominated the match and were unlucky to earn just a draw. LOSC managed 19 shots in the match, four of them being on goal. Les Verts, for their part, could only muster 6 total shots. Only an 81st minute goal from Romain Hamouma denied LOSC the victory.

At the bottom of the table AS Nancy Lorraine beat Brest 2-1. The result didn’t matter, but It did give the already relegated side a little bit of pride (even if the victory did come over the team propping up the table). Troyes had hopes of avoiding the drop, but they fell 1-2 to Valenciennes.

Elsewhere, PSG put a capper on their title winning campaign by beating Lorient 3-1 thanks to two goals from Kevin Gameiro. Second place finishers Marseille drew 0-0 with Stade de Reims. Sochaux, who could have been relegated had Troyes managed a victory drew 0-0 with Bastia. Bordeaux and Toulouse also won, beating Evian and Montpellier respectively.

That’s it for the 2012-13 season. PSG were crowned Champions and Marseille and Lyon will be joining them in the Champions League next season. Brest, Nancy, and Troyes were relegated from Ligue 1 and they will be replaced by Ligue 2 champions Monaco, Guingamp, and Nantes.
